The frequency and tone of the interactions in the welfare families limited the words and meanings the children heard. Because the welfare parents talked less often to their children, they talked in less varied contexts about less varied aspects of the children's experience. Because they spent less time interacting with their children, they had fewer opportunities to learn about their children's skill levels and the topics the children were interested in talking and hearing about. Perhaps as a result, proportionately more of their talk contained prohibitions and simple directives.29
